Right, so you work in a team of some extremely excitable characters and some pathetically lazy ones. Its a well known fact that for a team to perform well, each and every team member should contribute to the best of his/her potential. Somehow you feel that one of your colleagues simply doesn't want to work. The moment you request him to do something, he comes up with tons of excuses. How do you deal with him? How would you make sure that he's forced to contribute his part without you actually imposing yourself on him?
Can you think of something??
Oh come on, its pretty simple..
Email him a list of tasks and in the Cc field mark a copy to your boss. Howzzat? Once he realizes that the boss has also been informed of his tasks, he's bound to act on them. Well, this is just one of the many ways of getting things done in a graceful manner. I personally find this particular technique extremely effective.
Alright now lets move on from working with colleagues to actually leading them. Leading a team...Passing orders...Making people dance to your tune...Sounds exciting, isn't it? If it does then for sure you are not cut out for leadership. Read this piece for better understanding. Since my previous article clearly mentions some essential traits of being an effective leader, let me state for the first and last time as to how one should 'not' be leading a team.
By bossing around....
Yes, you've read it right. If you are the boss and seriously want your team to do well, never try being a 'Hitler'. Contrary to popular perception, leadership is not about flaunting your power. Its more about motivating people to give their best. So, how exactly do you motivate people? Again, its not some kind of rocket science. You just need to make them fall in love with their work. How? Well, that's for you to discover. Hint: Make them work to their strengths. Now keep twinkling your brains for solutions.
P.S.: Refer to my previous article on leadership for probable methods.
